I am trying to backup the movie "Stranger Than Fiction". I have been backing up DVDs for some time now and am quite experienced, but I'm having a problem that I can't figure out. I have a current version of ANYDVD to avoid the copy protection and I'm using DVD Shrink to rip and compress. When I try to open the file in DVD Shrink, I get an error message saying:

DVD Shrink has encountered an error and cannot continue.

    Failed to read file "D:\"

Usually, I would think this was due to a dirty or scratched disc or maybe my DVD drive is dirty, but I have tried it in the same old DVD drive and also in my brand new external burner. Has anybody else had this problem? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

There's a few out there that have the newer Sony protection like this one that Shrink and AnyDVD won't work on.

You can do movie only w/ Recode and AnyDVD.

Try CloneDVD - AnyDVD companion - not free but has a 21 day free trial.

Rip w/ DVDFab Decrypter (free) 1st then open those files in Shrink. link

Or RipIt4Me - which uses all free programs like Shrink, Decrypter and FixVTS. link

The above ways will work w/ this one.

This is soooo ironic, it's spooky. I am also an experienced user of DVD Shrink, Decrypter, and am currently running AnyDVD version 6.1.3.0.

Have been backing up happily until today when I was backing up the EXACT movie, listed by xtender67 "Stranger Than Fiction". Also today, I have received this error message on another movie "Zoom: Academy for Superheroes" as well... Not a Sony picture.

First time I've seen this error code while using Shrink.

    -------------------------------------------

So, to clarify, I'm receiving error code while doing the following:

    1. With AnyDVD running in background, I first attempted to run DVD Shrink.

    2. Next, I burned an .iso image (not compressed) to hard drive using DVD Decrypter ver 3.5.4.0.

    3. I then again attempted to open the image with Shrink. Same error code.

    4. I re-set all Decrypter settings to "default" and repeated above. Same error.

    5. I uninstalled and re-installed Shrink. Again, same thing.

    -----------------------------------------

I'm seriously considering taking up binkie's advice of trying CloneDVD, as I am quite satisfied with AnyDVD now. Anyone else think of anything else we can try here???

    Thanks, Steve in MN

Oh, and to clarify my last post, this error message DOES NOT end with any sort of "cyclical redundancy error" message, which I understand usually is Shrinks method of informing us that the disc is dirty or scratched...

The error message simply states "DVD Shrink encountered an error and cannot continue. Failed to read file "[drive/file]"

I am now currently ripping DVD with DVDFab Decrypter, and will let you know if that works... (I disabled AnyDVD to perform this operation).

    Hey Steve
The 2 you can't do both have Sony's latest junk on them (yep - Zoom has it too).
So there's several of the new Sony's Shrink can't handle even with AnyDVD.
Decrypter can't hanlde these at all my itself either.

A few others are - Saw3, Running W/ Scissors, Open Season, The Grudge 2, Marie Antionette, Crossover.
If you have AnyDVD set to show the media info - these all have the normal ARccOS & Puppetlock but have 40+ bad sectors.

CloneDVD & AnyDVD works on all - may just want to try it out. One thing I like that it does is 'blank' what you don't want (uncheck the unwanted title(s)) which helps save on compression.

Or if you have Nero - Recode - you can do movie only w/ AnyDVD running in the background.

But there are free ways to do it too - DVDFab Decrypter and RipIt4Me (see links above).

    Good morning Binkie,

Yep, makes sense about Sony. Figures! I did back up both DVD's fine, however, by following the procedure here:

    1. Disabled AnyDVD.

    2. Loaded FabDVD Decrypter. Selected "Main Movie" option. Saved output to a folder on the harddrive.

    3. Loaded Shrink and selected "Open files" option, opening the files from the harddrive.

    4. Allowed Shrink to do its job creating a shrunk .iso image.

    5. Ripped image to DVD-R drive using DVD Decrypter.

Worked fine. More convoluted process, but the end result was a quality back-up. I will be researching CloneDVD, the companion to AnyDVD, as you suggest, since the need for some of these steps might be eliminated in the future. I especially like how often AnyDVD is upgraded and improved upon. Wish we could say the same for Shrink, alas...

Thanks again, Binkie, and hope this info helps out more than just xtender.

    Steve

    You're welcome swk

Yes I wish Shrink was still updated too but that's not going to happen.

AnyDVD would need an update on there end for these new Sony's that don't work with Shrink but I have a feeling that may not happen.
Right now they're into perfecting cracking HD & Blu-Ray copy protection and Game Jackal. So I think Shrink may be on the back burner.

I may be wrong (haven't checked their forum recently) but the market is towards these - makes business sense on their end - $$$$ - but may disappoint some customers not trying to fix the Shrink and Sony stuff.

It has been my personal experience and observation that these errors are the result of multipal Keys: codes--Shrink cannot crack them in multipals. Use DVD decrypter -- but first go to tools; settings;click I/O Tab and check the IGNORE READ ERRORS . Now Decrypt to a folder on your HD --Now you can process the iso using Shrink to a 2nd folder without any errors as it is no longer encrypted--Open Shrink go to File and open disc image and instead of taking it from the original Disc you are doing it from your own HD. You can even create dvd files and even view it with Power DVD 5.0 --So dont forget to select the ISO for burning back to Disc using the DVD Decrypter . You might have to try a few times but you will figure it out I guarantee it --another note to keep in mind all discs do not always come off exactly the same, so dont just try this method automaticly --Use Shrink first. Also when using AnyDVD select Region 7 (Undesignated)

Hmmm... Interesting thoughts, Baelin. You'e not had issues with DVD Decrypter failing when you select "Ignore Read Errors" in I/O settings??

And won't AnyDVD read a DVD from any region? Why would you need to set this to Region 7, the "undesignated" region code?

I don't at all claim to have the answers, and you're right - a person will probably have to have a number of tools in the toolbox from here on out...

    Thanks!

swk -- Hello Steve, Always keep things simple. I still get errors now and again -- but nothing that I cant overcome-- you probally already have all the tools you need for backing up dvds-- just in case you dont here is a Link I'm sure you'll find quite interesting, and helpful as well as educational.
BTW Use the 7's on anyDVD when processing Sony Discs--cant say why but it worked for me. I have only done one sony disc as a favor -- most of what sony produces does not interest me! Oh well what can I say?

Pony up and buy AnyDVD and CloneDVD2!!! I did, after wasting far too much time with DVD shrink and "free" copies of anydvd. However, I do like to use DVD Shrink on ocassion when I either just want to copy the main movie only without other languages and certain surround audio info (I can widdle it down that way and sometimes get the whole movie on one SL DVD) or sometimes will split the movie into 2 SL DVDs if it is a movie that I feel only so-so about. I save the more costly DL DVDs for movies I truly value or which have great extra stuff. I refuse to "shrink" a DVD because I want the best quality I can get. Also, I can tell quite easily on my up-converting DVD and HD Plasma if there is any compression at all.

Anyway, my main reason for posting is that I had the same error that this thread is about with the movies "The Holiday" and "The Pursuit of Happiness." DVDshrink wouldn't open the DVD even with AnyDVD running. I was able to create iso files with anydvd and clonedvd, which I then figured I would open with DVDshrink and do my thing... but shrink wouldn't open the iso files either. Bummer.

I thought that the protection would be removed when the iso file was created, no? Anyone have an explanation for this? Which other program works similar to DVD shrink that may work? I really enjoy shrink's ability to allow the customized removal of each and every tidbit of info on the DVD.

Ok, thanks! Also, if you haven't seen "Children of Men" yet do so! It is a really thought provoking film and the cinematography is absolutely amazing - really brings back the art form of film making, scene/shot selection, that has become lost in many/most recent movies.

That's all. Thanks and happy ripping/burning!

    @sois
Rip in file mode instead of iso and you should be able to open those files in Shrink.

I have had that problem before with a few movies using dvd shrink, i realise the only movies i have problem with are those with dual layer, what i endup doing is coping a iso to the computer using dvd decrypter then burn them to dual layer disk, they work for me that way.

I've been using Ripit4Me ever since DVD Shrink stopped working. Haven't found a movie I can't burn yet. Just make sure you delete the completed movie files after you're done.

Oh by the way, you still need DVD Shrink and DVD Decryptor on your computer as RipIt4Me uses them both. Burn away!

persistance is the best tool here http://www.mrbass.org/dvdrip/ --however if you encounter alot of errors on a disc - try a different disc - sometimes that can be a problem as well. think about it - or just keep throwing your money away -- just for the record several years ago I rented a movie titled "Full Metal Jacket" and it would not play in my machine. I'm talkin' 5 maybe 6 different copies and none of them would play -- couple of years later I finally found one that did work and to my dissapointment the movie was crap...sorry wrong vainacular
